The San Benito girls golf team finished up its season at Rancho Cañada Golf Course East in Carmel in the Central Coast Section playoffs Tuesday.

“For the most part of the season, we practiced and played in the afternoon when the greens are faster,” said Baler coach Mark Tinder. “The greens were still wet so they were a little slower. Many players left the first putt short, which left a difficult second shot.”

No. 1 golfer Hillary Williams, a senior, finished with a 97 after scoring 8s on a couple par-4s.

“She did pretty well even though she was struggling on her short putts,” said Tinder, who Marshalled behind her group. “Hillary left herself some work to do. Golf is a game you have to remain focused and be confident in your abilities. When you miss one or two putts, it is easy to get sidetracked.”

Junior Corryn Pacheco had a 99, and junior Johni Kieswetter had a 121 after several shots sailed into the Carmel River.

“Hopefully she will learn from the experience and progress in her career,” Tinder said. “She is good athlete. You learn more things sometimes when you hit a high score than when you score low.”

Only the top four golfers advanced to the state. A few golfers in the meet finished under or right around the par of 72.

“The bar is definitely higher overall,” Tinder said. “I am happy to see so many of the girls doing well throughout the league. To my knowledge, we had the most girls qualifying to compete of any of the other teams at the meet. I think we did the best we could this year. I am looking forward to next year.”

Note: The boys golf team, which will also be coached by Tinder, starts practice Feb. 1.
