Hollister – More than 125 people will ride out to the 105-year-old A.R. Wilson Quarry in Aromas today as part of the Granite Rock’s first-ever “Rock ‘n’ Roll” Charity Poker Run.

“It’s a reason to go riding and get together and raise money for the United Way,” Marketing Service Manager Keith Severson said.

Severson said the company employs many motorcycle enthusiasts, such as salesman Ron Conway, who came up with the idea. Since many of the regional company’s customers also ride motorcycles, the idea was a good fit, Severson said.

Riders will start from four different Granite Rock officers and stop at various locations along the way and pick up playing cards, the rider with the best poker hand will win a gift certificate. Severson said he doesn’t have any expectations for how much money the event will raise for the San Benito County United Way, but he said they may be able to raise more than $2,000.

Riders will receive T-shirts, lunch and a tour of the historic quarry. The quarry was purchased in 1900 by A.R. Wilson and four other investors. Granite Rock, a privately held company, employs 700 people and does heavy construction for highway and airport projects. The company produces rock, sand, gravel, concrete and asphalt.
