Two Haybalers remain undefeated and in contention at The Bash wrestling tournament in Clovis East Monday, and lead a pack of four other grapplers from the San Benito wrestling team vying for top spots.
Junior Davila at 119 pounds and Josh Ramirez at 152 pounds each currently sit at 3-0 through the first day of the 66-team tournament, and are leading San Benito to their current seventh-place standing.
“We’re competing really good against these guys,” San Benito head coach Brian DeCarli said. “We’re seeing a lot of tough competition.”
Clovis East is in first place after the first day of the two-day tourney, although official point totals were not available at press time.
Joining Davila and Ramirez are four other Haybalers who are making their way through the consolation bracket, including Geo Coelho at 135 pounds, Steven Borba at 140 pounds, Josh Fontaine at 145 pounds and Enrique Lucatero at 171 pounds.
“We’re having a pretty good showing,” DeCarli said. “Depth-wise, [The Bash] is a little deeper and we’re getting some killer competition.”
Day two in Clovis will begin at 9 a.m.
Last week, San Benito finished second out of 46 teams at the Coast Classic in Scotts Valley, falling just 10.5 points behind first-place finisher Elk Grove.
Ramirez earned the top spot at 152 pounds, while teammates Davila and Lucatero finished runner-up in their respective weight divisions.
“I was really impressed with how they opened the tournament,” DeCarli said.
Kenny Salcedo (103 pounds) and Morris Stevens (119) each finished third, while Zach Rodriguez finished fourth at 135 pounds.
