The dog days of summer are nearly here and that means it is time to drag those kids outside and get them active, instead of letting them sit in front of the television all summer long.

A common complaint is that it is too hot to go out, which is true. But there are other ways to stay active and cool – such as swimming and water activities.

Beaches and lakes are not the only options, however. Cities and local gyms all around the bay area offer recreational swimming and even swimming instruction for those that don’t quite know how to swim yet.

Here is a list of some of the perfect places to go for a swim throughout the summer.

Hollister Recreational Department

Starting Monday, June 18, the Rec department in Hollister is offering swimming lessons and recreational swims at the community pool at San Benito High School. The lessons are for kids from the ages of 3 to 13. The kids are placed in groups based on age and their ability to swim.

The lessons are $77 each for a resident of the county. Lessons are grouped into two week sessions with a 30-minute class Monday through Thursday for two weeks. The first session will begin June 18 with two other sessions following and sign-ups have already begun.

The department is offering recreational swim as well at the San Benito High School pool. The recreational swims are Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. It costs $3 per person to get in and any child under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

For more information regarding the lessons, contact the Hollister Rec Department at 636-4390.

San Benito Aquatics

San Benito Aquatics is the swim team that represents Hollister. They were the first swim team in the city and program was founded in 1972 by John and Dottie Rose. San Benito Aquatics offers membership on the swim team to anyone that can swim one lap, freestyle, around the pool.

For the year-round swim team, prices range from $65 to $80 a month based on age. For kids who just want to be on a swim team for the summer, they can join the summer program for $250 for three months.

This program includes daily practices and the opportunity to compete in swim meets for free.

The team offers swimming lessons as well for prices that range from $80 to $120. The sessions are four weeks long and there are classes two days a week for 30 minutes starting at 6:15 p.m. For information about the swim team, call Coach Cathy at 636-2846.

Morgan Hill Aquatics Center

The aquatics center in Morgan Hill is a water park as well as a community pool. The pool contains a large swimming pool and a couple of wading pools with some water slides as well.

For entry into the water park and pool there is a non-resident daily admission fee of $8 for adults, $7 for teens, and $6 for kids and seniors, and admission for children under 2 is free.

The park is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the weekends.

The center offers group and private swim lessons for a non-resident fee of $76 per session for group lessons and $122.50 for private lessons. The age groups for the lessons range from infant to adult.

There are eight classes in the two-week session for group lessons and four classes in the two-week period for private lessons and classes are 30 minutes long.

Each kid that takes the lessons goes through a variety of levels and stages moving up a stage as they increase their skills and their ability to swim.
