The following are the remarks Sheriff Curtis Hill made Tuesday upon taking the oath of office for his second term.

It was an honor to accept the oath of office for my second term as your Sheriff/Coroner of San Benito County. I am eager to continue to serve as your Sheriff. Although there remains much to do, our potential as an organization is unlimited.

I renew my commitment to support and enhance your positions and to serve this office with dedication and honor. I ask that each of you make the same commitment to the department and to each other. My expectations of you are that you always remember that each of you represents the Sheriff’s Office – and each other as well.

We will work together in the best interest of the Sheriff’s Office and the people we serve. There will be times of disagreement, and proper ways to air such disagreements; but once a direction has been established, we will operate as a team, with commitment and loyalty.

It is expected we will continue to treat each other and the people we serve with respect and dignity. All of our actions will be taken without bias or personal prejudice.

When force must be used, it must be used because it is necessary, reasonable and proper, in addition to being legally justifiable. Force is never to be used to punish, but only to protect.

I expect that we will continue to recognize that our sole purpose here is to well and faithfully serve the people whose laws we enforce, and that in doing so we will never violate the public trust placed in our positions.

We will continue to encourage citizen cooperation and input into the Sheriff’s Office, as we have built tremendous trust within the county over the past four years. We cannot do our job alone. The citizens of San Benito County cannot do it alone either. Together we can work to identify problems and make our streets and homes safer for the citizens of our community. It is vital that we operate with the assistance and help of the public.

Above all, It is expected we will continue to progress as an organization, with the knowledge that each of us is giving our best effort to meet the mission of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office, which is:

To serve the public by establishing a partnership with the community; to protect life and property, prevent crime, and solve problems.

Again, I am honored to be your Sheriff/Coroner. I am so very proud of all of you and the outstanding commitment you each have to this organization and to the citizens we serve.
