“Those rotten Tea Party politicians refused to follow the script,” that was the overriding theme of the Kabuki Theater titled “The Great 2011 National Debt Crisis.” Although most attacks came from Democrats who predicted the end of the world, a few emanated from the mainstream Republicans including former GOP presidential candidate Senator John McCain. McCain’s said, essentially, that no one should attempt to slay that dragon. This is understandable since the Tea Party was threatening to become the Tea Party-poopers and ruin it for everyone by taking all their toys away. The Tea Party members thought they were elected to actually reduce the debt, not merely fake it. Boy, did they learn their lesson – no one, but no one, likes a party-pooper.

Most Tea Party members weren’t anywhere near Washington during the decades we careened headlong into the debt morass; they only came on the scene after we were trapped and they wanted to save us from our folly – but we do not want to be saved. The approved script for this made-for-TV drama was supposed to last exactly two hours including time for commercials, but the Tea Party ran it into overtime lousing up everyone’s busy campaign schedule.

Who knows how many votes the Congresses and White Houses bought with all that borrowed money over the many decades? But it’s been a perpetual celebration. Everyone who was anyone got a free ride except the peons who picked up all the bills. The invitations read, “You bring the earmarks and I’ll bring the tax breaks and we’ll dance all night. Tomorrow we’ll go out, call each other names and restock our reelection coffers!”

When the Tea Party-poopers threatened to turn off the music and make people pay up, a shudder went through the entire District of Columbia. “How can we get reelected if we have no goodies to give away?” was the cry from most politicians. They were certainly not alone. One could only imagine the panic down on K Street where the lobbyists and advocacy groups take in billions selling influence and getting the politicians to pay for it by borrowing on other people’s credit cards. “Not expand the debt? It’s downright un-American,” was heard between courses at every exclusive restaurant.

The public had been taken hostage long ago; now, fully immersed in the Stockholm syndrome, they joined the criticism – they did not want to lose their goodies either. The Sirens’ song of something for nothing – buy now, pay never – is a difficult addiction to handle, getting used to living above your means is a piece of cake, but giving up the cake is really tough. The public discovered that with the right votes they could eat their cake and have it too – someone else will pay for the whole deal sometime in the future and if that doesn’t happen, so what?

As usual, the serious smack talking came only after the deal was in the bag – Vice President Joe Biden said negotiating with the Tea Party-poopers was like dealing with terrorists. Then the VP picked up his $2,200 monthly full-cost rent check, money he gets for allowing the Secret Service to use a cottage on his property where they provide security to the Biden family. I just wonder what percent of that check was paid for with borrowed money. Debt crisis? No way, let’s party!
