San Juan Bautista – The Anzar Hawks did not play “beautiful” volleyball on Tuesday night against visiting King City, and fell in four games in the season opener of the Mission Trail Athletic League.
Despite the Hawks pulling out a game-one victory, Anzar could not ride the momentum of the opening win, and lost 25-23, 20-25, 17-25, 19-25.
King City is the largest school in the MTAL, as well as last season’s league champ.
Anzar coach Chris Wardlaw said it was, unfortunately, a sloppy match.
“There was just a lot of ugly volleyball,” the coach said. “We could have beaten them 3-0 or they could have beaten us 3-0. I was disappointed. We didn’t play beautiful volleyball.”
After the first game, the Hawks battled not only King City but with missed serves, including five in the second game alone.
“I don’t want to take away the victory from King City,” Wardlaw said. “We missed an atrocious number of serves.”
Christina Flores led the Hawks with seven kills against King City, while Erin Deleissegues had 21 digs and Jaclyn Wiley contributed 11 digs on the night.
Anzar (0-1 MTAL, 3-6 overall) will look to rebound today at 6pm against Carmel.
