The Anzar girls soccer team defeated Marina and Calvary

When Pacific Collegiate lost to York 1-0 on Friday, word spread about as quickly as technology would allow it.

The Anzar girls soccer team, which defeated Marina 13-0 Friday, clinched the Coastal Athletic League championship when the Pumas fell 1-nil.

“My girls sent me text messages over the weekend,” coach Deric McLean said. “That was kind of cool.”

Anzar’s 2-0 win over Gonzales last Wednesday supplied them with an automatic berth into next week’s Central Coast Section playoffs, but the first-place standing was still in question at that time.

The Hawks will host Pacific Collegiate on Thursday in a game that could have decided the CAL title. But the Pumas lost twice last week, and Thursday’s contest will be somewhat of a warm-up game for Anzar as they prep for the postseason.

“It’s nice to now work on what we need to work on, instead of going down swinging,” McLean said.

Taking a look at their recent record, in which Anzar is unbeaten in their previous 11 games, one may be puzzled as to what, exactly, the Hawks need to improve upon.

Anzar defeated Calvary Christian 7-0 on Monday behind two goals apiece from Alex Brown and Lauren Bellone.

Olivia Austin had a goal and a pair of assists, while Cayley Faurot-Daniels had two assists and Michelle Chatley had a goal. Brianna McCain and Jocelyn Sicairos each supplied an assist.

The win comes just three days after Anzar’s 13-0 victory against Marina.

“I am so blessed to have so many girls who would start on any other team in our league,” McLean said. “Our depth is unreal.”

Brown scored two goals on two shots and had three assists within the first 20 minutes of the game, while McCain had a hat trick in the game as well.

Olivia Fiori scored her first two goals of her varsity career in the 13-goal win.

Anzar (10-2-2, 9-0-2 CAL) will host their regular season finale Thursday against Pacific Collegiate. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
