Alyssa Rodriguez scores 25 and 36 points in two games against
Georgiana Bruce Kirby and Anchorpoint Christian
The Anzar girls basketball team breezed through Georgiana Bruce Kirby and Anchorpoint Christian this week, and improved their record to 6-1 in the Coastal Athletic League.

On Wednesday, Alyssa Rodriguez scored 25 points and Nicole Mello had a double-double to lead the Hawks, which beat Kirby 54-13.

Mello had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Rodriguez had seven steals in the resounding win, which had Anzar up 37-7 at halftime.

On Friday, Anzar played a make-up contest against Anchorpoint and upended the Warriors 74-54.

Rodriguez dropped a season-high 36 points to lead the Hawks, and added seven steals. She shot 5 of 11 from behind the arc.

The point total also vaulted Rodriguez past Soquel’s Hannah Passafuime as the leading scorer in the Monterey Bay area. Rodriguez is averaging 23.27 points per game.

Mello had a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds for Anzar, which also got 13 points from Carly Johnson.

“It was a real offensive game,” said coach Aaron Netzel, who was disappointed with the defensive performance against Anchorpoint.

“That was disappointing,” NetzeI added. “I guess we’ve never played them, so there was an element of that.”

Anzar will play at Marina on Monday at 6:15 p.m. The game is slated for CSUMB.

With York next Friday, Anzar’s season will close out with games against Pacific Collegiate and Santa Cruz Waldorf, two teams that are vying for first place with Anzar in the CAL.

“I think it’s ours to win or lose,” Netzel said. “We’re in the drivers seat, and it all depends on how well we do in those two games.”
