Despite a 2-1 match lead, the Hawks’ girls volleyball team wasn’t able to hold off King City in the team’s fifth Mission Trail Athletic League match of the year. King City rallied to win the match’s final two sets to pull away with a 3-2 victory.

The loss moves Anzar’s overall record to 8-2 and 3-2 in the MTAL.

Anzar dropped the first set 25-19 on the road, but quickly took the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15.

The Hawks couldn’t keep the moment though, dropping the next two sets 25-16 and 15-12.

SBHS tennis

The San Benito girls tennis squad returned to its winning ways to take its first league game of the year Tuesday over Watsonville – evening its overall record at 5-5 and 1-2 in league.

The Balers dominated, winning five of the seven matches over Watsonville – including the top two single player and double pair matches.

Audrey Marshall won in straight sets with identical 6-4 scores. And No. 2 singles player Ally Triolo won in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

No. 4 singles player Amanda Alvarez also took her match is straight sets winning with scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Double partners Annie Tobias and Gianna Brigantino won their first match together in a tight three-set match. After winning the first set 6-3, the Baler pair dropped the second set 4-6 before running away with the tie-breaking third.

Makenzie Miguel and Berenice Bribiesca also took their first match together winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1.

For the first time Katarina Ortiz and Jessica White participated in a doubles match Tuesday, but the pair dropped the match in three sets. After losing the first set 6-0, the pair dominated the second set with a 6-0 score. However, the momentum wouldn’t carry over to the third and deciding set.

The tennis team hosted Monterey on Wednesday because of a scheduling conflict later in the season. The Balers also hosted Gilroy on Thursday. Look online at freelancenews.com for an update.

SBHS volleyball

The girls volleyball team knocked off its second league win of the season Tuesday, beating Notre Dame 3-1 on the road. The win evens up the Balers’ Tri-County Athletic League record at 2-2 and 9-13 overall.

The win was a dominant effort for the Balers, who won the first two sets of the match.
