Three-point play in closing seconds gives Greenfield 39-36 win
over Anzar
San Juan Bautista
The Anzar Hawks came up on the short end of another close basketball game Wednesday, when a three-point play by Greenfield broke a 36-all tie in the waning seconds of regulation.
The Bruins would hold on for the 39-36 victory.
The official’s call that awarded Greenfield with the three-point play was perhaps controversial, as Anzar coach Ed Cecena said the foul was on the floor, but referees awarded Greenfield’s shooter with the continuation.
The basket was good, and the Bruin made the and-one free throw to give Greenfield the three-point win.
“We were on the bad side of a bad call and they ended up winning,” Cecena said. “That’s just the way it goes.”
Cecena said the difference in the game came in the second quarter, however. The Hawks led 11-6 after the opening period, but Greenfield hit six 3-pointers and outscored Anzar 18-10 in the second stanza. The Bruins took a 24-21 lead to the break.
“They had a real good shooting night – 3-point shooting night,” Cecena said. “That was probably the difference in the game.”
Erik Olson had a double-double to lead Anzar, contributing 16 points and 17 rebounds. Steven Mockabee added nine points – all 3’s – and pulled down five boards and dished off five assists. Ryan Waller had eight points in the game.
The loss puts Anzar at 2-7 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 7-16 overall.
The Hawks will play at King City Friday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
