The Anzar Hawks improved to 3-0 in dual meets Thursday when they easily defeated Downtown College Prep (San Jose) 15-96 at Gavilan College.

“So far we’re undefeated this year and doing pretty well,” coach Doug MacKinnon said.

Calvary Christian (Pacific Grove), Oakwood Country (Morgan Hill) and Santa Cruz Waldorf were in attendance, but only ran three or four of its members and did not receive a score as a result.

Georgiana Bruce Kirby (Santa Cruz) did not show.

“You can only race against who shows up,” MacKinnon said.

And the Hawks most certainly showed up, scoring just 15 points total, the lowest possible score in cross country. Anzar crossed the finish line with the first five places, and cruised to another win.

Miles MacKinnon crossed first in 17:07, Alex Sanchez in 17:08, Aron Hsia-Coron finished in 17:09, Colin Parson recorded a time of 17:11 and Christian Heath rounded out the Hawks in 17:12.

Earlier this season on Sept. 27, Anzar won their first meet against Oakwood Country, Calvary Christian and Latino College Prep (San Jose).

On Oct. 3, at a meet hosted by the York School, Anzar improved to 2-0 with a win against Santa Cruz Waldorf, Marina and Georgiana Bruce Kirby.

MacKinnon called York one of the tougher opponents in Division B of the Mission Trails Athletic League, as well as Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz. Anzar will compete against Pacific Collegiate for the first time on Oct. 25 at Gavilan College.

At a center meet, which combines both Division A (large) and Division B (small) schools, Anzar took third place overall behind first-place Pacific Grove and second-place Kind City, both D-A schools.

“We’re undefeated against section B schools, which are schools our own size,” MacKinnon said.

Anzar will race today at the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont.

Girls Water Polo

The San Benito Lady ‘Balers continued their dominance over Tri-County Athletic League opponents, thumping Notre Dame 23-5 on Thursday in Salinas.

Since San Benito’s league opening 12-9 victory over rival Salinas, the Lady ‘Balers have outscored their opponents by an average of 16.8 goals over five games.

“On defense, they’re picking it up a lot,” coach Lacey Sutton said. San Benito was without starter Ronnie Stern for Thursday’s game, and Sarah Kelso took the starting spot in Stern’s absence. “We were without one starter, so the girls picked it up.”

No statistics were available at press time.

This weekend, the Lady ‘Balers are competing in the Lincoln Halloween Classic. On Friday, San Benito was scheduled to play Mountain View at Willow Glen High School at 4pm. However, the pool at Willow Glen was in need of repair, and the game was rescheduled for 5pm at Lincoln High School.

Due to time change, Mountain View was forced to forfeit.

Today, San Benito will continue play at the Lincoln Halloween Classic. They are scheduled to play Aragon at 10:05am, and Santa Teresa at 2:30pm. Both matches are currently slated for Willow Glen.

On Tuesday, the Lady ‘Balers (6-0 TCAL, 13-4 overall) will host Santa Catalina (7-0, 11-4) in a showdown for TCAL supremacy.

On Thursday, San Benito added two games at Woodside High School. Game times are at 5 and 6pm.

Anzar Volleyball

The Anzar Hawks fell to King City on Thursday in four games 19-25, 13-25, 25-19, 23-25.

No details or statistics were reported.

The Hawks are 4-3 in the Mission Trails Athletic League, 7-10 overall.

Anzar will return home to face Carmel on Tuesday at 6pm. Previously on Sept. 20, Anzar defeated Carmel on the road in five games.
