Monterey – The Anzar boys soccer team scored three times in the second half and overcame a one-goal halftime deficit to defeat host York 4-2 Wednesday in Monterey.

The Hawks trailed 2-1 at the break, but scored the tying goal three minutes into the second half and the go-ahead score 12 minutes later.

“It was a tough game,” coach Ruben Fuentes said. “At the half, the kids were a little down in confidence. But they got their focus back, we made a couple of changes and that just gave them a big surge. They just dominated the rest of the game.”

The surge was needed for the Hawks, which will remain in first place in the Coastal Athletic League with a 4-0-1 record. Pacific Grove, which sits in second place in the CAL, defeated Calvary Christian 6-1 Wednesday and own a 4-1 league record.

York jumped out ahead at the start by connecting from the right side in the 4th minute. But Anzar’s Joel Gutierrez, who had two goals on the day, found the back of the net in the 10th minute to tie the game.

Later, York took the lead in the 30th minute on a goal similar to their first score, Fuentes said, and went to the break up 2-1.

“We made an offensive change, which kind of surprised them,” Fuentes said. “The tying goal was critical to score early in the second half.”

Try three minutes into the second half. Gutierrez tied the game at two goals apiece after he got his second score of the game in the 43rd minute.

From there, it was all Anzar.

Alex Sanchez picked up the go-ahead goal, and what would eventually turn out to be the game-winner, in the 55th minute, while Alexis Sicairos made the game comfortable for the Hawks when he scored in the 75th minute.

“We had a lot of good support from the parents,” added Fuentes, who noted the help and support of assistant coach George Prado.

The Hawks will look to remain perfect on the pitch when they host Calvary Christian on Friday in San Juan Bautista. Earlier in the season, Anzar won at Calvary Christian, 3-0.

Friday’s kick-off is 3:30 p.m.
