Hollister – The 14U Hollister Hawks hosted their Patriot’s Day Weekend Tournament last weekend. The tournament included six teams: Hollister Hawks, Peninsula Storm, Fremont Fury, Peninsula Padres, Merced Cubs and Premier Baseball.

The hometown Hollister Hawks came within one run of winning the tournament title, but they fell short in extra innings in the championship game against the Peninsula Padres. The Hawks finished in second place with an overall record of 3-2.

The Hawks’ pitchers were solid throughout the tournament. Both Russell Czernek and Bret Furtado threw complete games for victories. Russell threw a shutout and Furtado allowed just one unearned run.

The Hawks used nine pitchers in the tournament: Anthony Alvarez, Stevie Cabral, Jacob Eichhorn, Justin Terrill, Miles Sanchez, Al Reyes and Matt Miguel.

Defensively, the Hawks turned in several gems. Jacob Eichhorn, playing in his first tournament with the Hawks, made a nice running catch to snare a sinking line drive against the Merced Cubs.

Bret Furtado, playing center field, gunned out runner at home in the opening inning against Premier Baseball.

Dane Lamanna and Justin Terrill turned a big league double play late in the game against Premier to insure the Hawks’ shutout stayed intact.

Chad Whitehead played flawless defense at shortstop all tournament, making tough plays look routine. Al Reyes pounced on an excellent bunt by a Peninsula player, fielded the ball and fired the throw to first to get the out.

As a team, the Hawks hit .276 with 11 doubles and one triple. The Hawks had an on-base percentage of .429 and stole 20 bases.

The Hawks hope to build on their strong showing at this tournament when they take the field in San Jose on Oct. 2 and 3 in a Hardtke World of Baseball Tournament.
