Trailing by one and with one less man, Anzar mounts improbable
comeback over Pacific Collegiate Tuesday
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

Trailing 3-2 with a man down and 30 minutes left in regulation, the Anzar High boys soccer team mounted an improbable comeback Tuesday when it defeated Pacific Collegiate 4-3 in San Juan Bautista, and scored one of its biggest wins against one of the toughest teams in the Coastal Athletic League.

Tied 2-2 at halftime, Pacific Collegiate went up 3-2 early in the second half before a Hawks player was red carded and forced to leave the field. Down to just 10 players, though, Anzar scored the equalizer on a goal from Danny Ramos in the 50th minute.

Anzar head coach Carlos Zepeda said he then played a defensive formation.

“I wanted to at least get a tie,” Zepeda said.

Instead the Hawks scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of play when Alby Albertson’s throw-in landed at the feet of Juan Carlos Vega, whose shot from 25 yards out found the back of the net and supplied Anzar with the come-from-behind victory.

“This was a big win,” Zepeda said. “It was PCS and PCS is one of the top teams in league right now.

“To come back and win was beautiful.”

The Hawks improve to 3-0 in the CAL, 3-1 overall, while Pacific Collegiate falls to 1-1-1 in league.

“To beat PCS,” Zepeda said, “that’s real good.”

Anzar has yet another formidable opponent this week in Pacific Grove, however. The Breakers tied PCS 1-1 last week, and will visit San Juan Bautista on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
