The Anzar girls basketball team rebounded to win Monday after dropping their first league game of the season last week.

On Monday, the Hawks defeated York 55-14 behind Alyssa Rodriguez’ 25 points. The Anzar freshman had six steals to go along with three rebounds.

Nicole Mello and Liliana Resendez each added 10 points for Anzar, which improved to 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic League. Mello and Resendez also had 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Hawks ran their trap early in the game, and switched to a man defense in the second half after they shut York out in the first quarter. The Hawks led 30-6 at halftime.

“I think it was really important,” coach Aaron Netzel said of the win, “especially after [Thursday].”

Last Thursday, the Hawks lost to Santa Cruz Waldorf 52-49, despite 23 points from Rodriguez. Mello added 12 points and 11 boards for the Hawks.

“Basically, what happened was that we played poorly,” Netzel said. “We had a chance to win this game and we did not come through.”

The two teams were tied at 49-49 when Waldorf’s guard heaved a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that went in for the victory.

Anzar will (6-7) will play at Georgiana Bruce Kirby Wednesday. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
