CARMEL VALLEY

The Anzar cross country strengthened their position in the Coastal Athletic League on Wednesday when the boys defeated York 19-41 and the girls did the same, beating York 20-38 at Garland Park in Carmel Valley.

After the Hawks earned the No. 2 preseason ranking among all Division V schools in the Central Coast Section, York was expected to be one of Anzar’s challengers within league as they recently finished second among D-5 schools at the MTAL/CAL Center Meet at Toro Park.

Although that might not be the case after Wednesday’s dual meet, Hawks coach Doug MacKinnon is pleased with his team’s progression, nonetheless.

“The team keeps surprising me with how strong they are,” MacKinnon said. “We’ve got some strong runners, and everyone is running hard and staying in a pack.”

Aaron Hsia-Coron once again clocked the fastest time in 14:59 and teammate Christian Heath finished second overall in 15:46. Izzy Parra was fourth in 16:18, Jacob Wilkenson was fifth at 16:26 and Armando Zepeda was seventh in 16:32.

Complete times were not reported for the girls team, although Anzar’s Sabrina Gonzalez was first overall at 20:26 and teammate Naomi Frenzel was second in 20:42.

The Hawks are off all next week and will return Oct. 16 at Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz, where Pacific Collegiate, Georgiana Bruce Kirby, Santa Cruz Waldorf and Oakwood are expected to be in attendance.
