Two late goals by Anzar supplied enough ammo in a 2-0 win
against Gonzales

Two late goals by the Anzar girls soccer team was just enough to best Gonzales Wednesday, as the Hawks held on for the 2-0 win.

Scores in the 78th and 82nd minutes prevented Anzar from another scoreless tie, as the Hawks tied York 0-0 in their previous contest one week ago.

“It was an issue of the dam breaking,” coach Deric McLean said. “Everyone was feeling the 0-0 tie really badly. Once we scored the one, everything went a lot better. Those (final) 12 minutes were a lot better.”

Alex Brown broke the scoreless game in the 78th minute off a pass from Christina Tanouye, while Brown assisted on a goal from Cayley Faurot-Daniels in the 82nd minute.

“Cayley’s goal was just perfect,” McLean said. “It was 25 yards out on the left side … That’s our bread and butter … shooting from 25 yards out. We’ve just got some phenomenal shooters.”

Although it was 0-0 throughout the majority of the game, McLean said Gonzales never threatened to score.

Anzar keeper Erin Deleissegues made just five saves, while the Hawks put 25 shots on Gonzales’ net.

With the win, the Hawks are 7-0-2 in the Coastal Athletic League, and hold a half-game lead on Pacific Collegiate (6-0-2), which will play Thursday at third-place Soledad.

The Hawks will return Friday at Marina. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
