Anzar girls basketball team will play Oakwood Wednesday before
rematch with Pacific Collegiate on Friday

The Anzar High girls basketball team continued on their collision course with Pacific Collegiate Saturday when they soundly defeated Anchorpoint Christian 67-43 in San Juan Bautista, soundly defeated a team Pacific Collegiate lost to recently.
Behind 14 points from Alyssa Rodriguez, 13 from Nicole Mello and 12 from Kelsey Robledo, the Hawks improved to 5-1 in the Coastal Athletic League and will visit 6-1 PCS on Friday.
“It just comes down to Friday,” Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said. “We just have to beat PCS Friday at their place.”
Friday’s match-up in Santa Cruz could very well decide which team emerges with the CAL crown, as both teams enter with one loss to their record.
After Pacific Collegiate defeated Anzar 43-41 on Jan. 16 – which is the Hawks’ only league defeat this season – the Pumas lost to Anchorpoint Christian 41-32 just four days later.
“I think we’re really gonna hit our stride on Friday,” Netzel said. “It’s gonna be a big game obviously, and we’ll see what we’re made of.”
Saturday’s game against Anchorpoint was a strong measuring-stick win for Anzar, which held an 18-10 lead after one quarter and a 34-22 lead at halftime.
“Today, there were a lot of things I liked,” Netzel said.
Rodriguez’ stat line included seven rebounds and four steals, while her team-high 14 points – 11 of which came in the second half – was aided by a strong 7 of 10 performance at the free throw line.
Mello also added a season-high six steals and Robledo pulled down eight rebounds.
Liliana Resendez had 10 points in the win, while “sixth-man” Carly Johnson came off the bench and had nine.
Netzel noted that play off the bench has been inconsistent this season, but Saturday’s game was a different story.
“It’s been a little inconsistent in terms of points off the bench,” he said, “but tonight was a really good effort.”
Point guard Sydnee Masuen had just eight points in Saturday’s victory, but pocketed 10 steals.
Anzar will host Oakwood School Wednesday in San Juan Bautista at 6 p.m., and will visit Pacific Collegiate Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The Anzar High boys basketball team lost to visiting Stevenson 72-24 Friday in San Juan Bautista.
Anzar’s Isaac Staley led the Hawks with 11 points.
The Hawks are now 1-7 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 1-15 overall. They’ll visit Greenfield on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
