Carmel – The Anzar Hawks battled Carmel and adversity Thursday night and defeated the host Padres in five games, picking up another league win.
Anzar upended Carmel 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 14-25, 15-13 to improve to 1-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 4-6 overall.
“That was the best game of the season,” coach Chris Wardlaw said. “Scoring wise, they still went up and down, but they played their best defense of the season, by far. They had a lot of fun.”
The Hawks had 76 digs as a team Thursday, which even led Carmel coaches to compliment Wardlaw on the squad’s stingy defense.
The coach said he’s been seeking strong serving, great defense and good ball control this season.
“The serving has been inconsistent, but the defense has been there,” he said.
Erin Deleissegues and Jaclyn Wiley were the offensive and defensive leaders, Wardlaw said, supplying the Hawks with 36 and 15 digs, respectively. Deleissegues also had 14 kills on the night, while Wiley contributed 13 kills as well.
“They were unbelievable back there,” Wardlaw said.
Britni Ramos added nine digs, while setter Kerstin Tuning had 33 assists.
“That was my setter’s best game of the season so far,” the coach added. “She really helped the offense.”
This weekend, the Hawks will get a preview of the Central Coast Section playoffs at the Mount Madonna Tournament, which will host some of the best teams in Division IV.
On Tuesday, the Hawks will host Gonzalez at 6pm.
