The Anzar Hawks girls soccer team scored a 2-0 shutout victory Tuesday in their league-opener against Soledad in San Juan Bautista.
The Hawks defense held Soledad to just three shots on net for the entire game, and keeper Erin Deleissegues made all three stops.
“If I had to estimate, I’d say that the possession was 80/20 in our favor, which made me very happy,” coach Deric McLean said. “We have been stressing possession and it is always wonderful to instantly see hard work pay dividends.”
Olivia Austin scored in the 24th minute off a crossing pass from wing player Michelle Chatley, while Jocelyn Sicairos scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute on a kick from just outside the box that may have grazed the crossbar, McLean said.
“We had strong games from nearly everyone, with mistakes coming few and far between, but a few girls are extra worthy of mention,” said McLean, who highlighted the play of the freshman Sicairos, who pocketed the first goal of her high school career, as well as Austin and Alex Brown.
“Without a doubt, [Tuesday’s] standout player in the back was one of the senior captains, Molly Slovacek,” McLean added. “She has been asked to move from the position of a traditional marking back to that of an attacking wingback, which is not an easy transition. She executed with skill and poise that I think is still surprising those around her.”
One area in need of improvement for Anzar, though, is finishing. McLean recorded 21 shots on goal for the Hawks offense, but only two found the back of the net.
“But that’s a good win to start the league for us,” McLean said.
Anzar will play today at York, who are coming off a 9-1 win on Tuesday against Marina. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
