Anzar claims first place again among teams from the Coastal
Athletic League
SALINAS

The Anzar cross country team finished fourth overall, first among Coastal Athletic League teams, at the MTAL/CAL Center Meet at Toro Park in Salinas Thursday.

Aaron Hsia-Coron was fourth overall in 17:06 to lead the Hawks, while Brittany Romero led the girls team in 24:45.

Christian Heath (18:26), Izzy Parra (18:53), Jacob Wilkenson (18:55) and Armando Zepeda (19:07) rounded out the Hawks, which haven’t finished worse than first in either of the Center Meets this season.

“Not to make excuses, but I think everyone was suffering a little bit from the heat,” said coach Doug MacKinnon, who added that temperatures were about 97 degrees during the race. “The kids were a little disappointed they didn’t PR.

“I was just happy they all made it back. It was too hot to run, but what are you gonna do?”

Carmel, King City and Greenfield occupied the first three spots in front of Anzar, but all three teams are a part of the Mission Trail Athletic League.

On the girls side, Lauren Bellone (25:37), Naomi Frenzel (25:38), and Kelly Gomez (29:22) finished behind Romero. No standing was reported for the girls team.

The Hawks will run again at Gavilan College on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Oakwood, York, Monterey Bay Academy and Pacific Collegiate. It will be the final meet for the Hawks before the MTAL/CAL Championships at Toro Park, scheduled for Nov. 6
