Fremont outscores San Benito 15-8 in the fourth quarter,
prevails in 49-42 victory at Fukishima Invitational in San Jose
SAN JOSE

The San Benito High boys basketball team held tight with Fremont through three quarters Thursday night, but the Firebirds pulled away in the final stanza in a 49-42 victory at the Fukishima Invitational at Independence High School in San Jose.

Tied at 34-all, Fremont outscored the Haybalers 15-8 in the fourth quarter en route to the seven-point win.

San Benito is now 3-4 overall. Coupled with Tuesday’s 61-52 defeat against Monta Vista, and the ‘Balers have been eliminated from the Fukishima Invitational.

San Benito head coach John Becerra said the fourth quarter was more of the same for the Haybalers.

“We missed too many layups, which we should have scored,” Becerra said. “We couldn’t hit consistently from the outside, either.

“Throughout the game we just didn’t score, and 42 points isn’t that much.”

Dominic Zanella led the ‘Balers with 16 points behind 8 of 10 shooting at the free-throw line. Jason Canchola added nine points for San Benito.

The Haybalers will return to non-tournament play on Tuesday when they will host Seaside (1-3) at Mattson Gym in Hollister. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
