The San Benito swimmers had no trouble defeating visiting North Salinas on Tuesday.

North Salinas didn’t have a boys team, and the JV and varsity teams combined to swim against each other.

“I am still glad we had the meet,” said Baler boys coach Leif Nordstrom. “Any time we can have a time trial, we can get the better.”

Blane Curtis came close to recording Central Coast Section times in the 100-meter freestyle event and the 100-meter breast stroke.

Curtis has a personal best of 1:01.69 in the breaststroke (1.2 from CCS) and 51.69 in the backstroke (.3 from CCS).

“I thought he had it in the 100 free,” Nordstrom said. “He is so close. He swam a perfect race until the last flag. He was exhausted by the end. He does much better when there is someone to compete against. He has to have someone next to him who will push him.”

Christian Smith set a new CCS qualifying time with a 59:88 in the 100-meter backstroke event though he ran into the lane to start off. The 400-meter free relay posted a CCS time of 3:36.50.

The Balers will compete against visiting RLS on Thursday in what should be a close meet.
