Emergency Services issued some tips to help residents fight the
sweltering heat and avoid heath exhaustion.
As the temperatures rise in the San Benito County and Hollister, the San Benito County Public Health Division and the Office of Emergency Services issued some tips to help residents fight the sweltering heat and avoid heath exhaustion.
They are the following:
Health officials warn that people should drink more water, juice and other fluids during the summer heat. Avoid having drinks with caffeine and alcohol, and eat regularly.
Another way to avoid the heat is to stay indoors and in an air-conditioned area. Also, a cold shower or bath is a good way fight the hot weather.
If you must go outside, wear as little clothing as possible, according to health officials. Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose clothing. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat is also a good idea to keep cool. When you are in the sun, wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher.
Try not to go outside, or plan outdoor activities, during the late afternoon when it is the hottest time of day. Instead, plan activities before noon or in the evening.
If you choose to workout or exercise outside, pace yourself and take scheduled breaks. You should start slow and gradually pick up your pace over time. If you become short of breath and your heart starts pounding, stop immediately, according to health officials. Get to a cool or shady area and rest.
And finally, when it’s hot outside, continually check on your friends and family to make sure they are okay, especially if they are elderly. Have someone check on you as well.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or stroke.
