The Hollister Heat 8U girls fastpitch softball team went 3-1 at the Rohnert Park Classic last weekend, avenging a loss to the Benicia Outlaws in the championship final.

“We lost to the Outlaws in the first game (during pool play),” said manager Mike Moisa, whose Heat squad lost to Benicia 3-0. “They were intimidated by the parents and coaches. They were very verbal.

“But in the championship, I just had them focus on the game. I told the girls they just have to play the game, give it all they have, and they stepped up.”

Keeping Benicia off the scoreboard early, Hollister plated its first run in the opening frame when Amanda Moisa connected on an RBI double. Noel Chavarria then trailed with an RBI single in the second to put the Heat up 2-0.

In the third, Hollister tacked on three more runs when Aeja Rosette hit a bases-clearing triple to left-center field to supply the Heat with a comfortable 5-0 cushion, more than enough to keep the Outlaws at bay.

Chavarria teamed up with Mylah Smiley to shutout Benicia.

“They were on their game and they played above normal to win the game,” Moisa said.

Hollister’s 3-1 record included a pair of victories over the Rohnert Park Rebels. The Heat defeated the Rebels 10-2 on Saturday, then again on Sunday by an 8-2 margin.

Hollister will play in its final tournament of the season this weekend when it travels to San Jose to compete in the Quicksilver Tournament at Pioneer High School.
