could be closed and four Santa Cruz-area beaches could see staff
reductions to help balance the state budget, according to a
proposal by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. In total, 48 state parks,
beaches, reserves and recreation areas could be closed under the
plan.

The parks would be closed until enough money is available to reopen them. The governor’s office also said some parks could be turned over to local governments to operate.
Henry W. Coe State Park – east of Morgan Hill – and Fremont Peak State Historic Park – 11 miles south of San Juan Bautista – are favorites among local hikers.
The four beaches that could be affected under the proposal are New Brighton, Seacliff, Manresa and Natural Bridges. In total, 16 beaches could see their number of lifeguards cut to save costs.
