Holiday giving and travel
Dear Lindsay,
I don’t have a lot of money, but I’d like to get or do something nice for my friends for Christmas. Any ideas?
-Gift Exchanger
Dear Gift Exchanger,
There are plenty of things you can do, even if you are low on cash. Have you and your group of friends do a Secret Santa gift exchange. You put your names in a hat, and everyone draws one and buys a gift for that person. Set a budget limit as well.
Or, you can do what I used to do. Buy small stockings from the dollar store, and some candy and inexpensive little gifts, and stuff the stockings with them. That way all your friends have a little something from you. Whether or not they got you something, the most rewarding gift is the gift of giving.
Dear Lindsay,
My best friend is always on Myspace, but whenever I send her a message or comment, she never responds back. How can I tell her it hurts my feelings?
-Feeling Neglected
Dear Neglected,
Just talk to her. A best friend is there to listen and understand. Let her know that it bugs you and that it would be nice to talk to her every once in a while. MySpace is a “place for friends” so own up to the motto. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t realize how it does hurt you. Once you tell her, she’ll start replying.
Dear Lindsay,
My family is going on a road trip to see relatives for Thanksgiving and I always feel really sick after being in a car for hours. What can I do to make the ride better?
-Sick of Car Rides
Dear Sick of Car Rides,
Car sickness can be a real downer. A few tips should help it. Don’t think about it; there is a saying “mind over matter.” If you tell yourself you won’t get sick, then you won’t. But if you keep thinking about how much you dread the car ride because you get sick, then you’ll jinx yourself.
Also, don’t read. That used to be my problem. I know that reading passes the time, but sometimes an mp3 player helps more. This way you can look out the window on occasion. If you look up every once in a while, you’ll know where you’re at and the motion won’t get to you as much. Lastly, keep the window cracked. Fresh air helps as well.
Dear Lindsay,
My mom wants me to volunteer at the homeless shelter when it opens next week and I really don’t want to go. Why should I go?
-To go or not?
Dear To go or Not,
There are many reasons why you should help out at the homeless shelter. If you are in the government class at the high school, it helps with the community service you need. It also helps your morale. You are helping those who are less fortunate than you, and doing your part to help them leaves you feeling satisfied.
The shelter will save lives as well, since winter is fast approaching and it will get extremely cold. You’re helping save a life, and lift the spirits of someone who is not as privileged as you to have a home and a family.
