The former BMX track at the Veterans Memorial Park never got off the ground.
It had sat unused since its completion in the spring of 2002, while it cost $5,000 at the time through park impact fees. This week, the San Benito County Public Works Department is filling the space – just a hole now of sorts – with dirt from a berm that is being removed at the corner of the park adjacent to Hillcrest Road and Memorial Drive.
The county is attempting to do the job in house, so its crews starting last week were using the berm’s dirt to fill in the former BMX track, said Steve Wittry, public works administrator for the county. The Veterans Park Commission previously had approved removal of the berm that surrounds the San Benito Babe Ruth field, he said.
Wittry expected to have the hole filled early this week. Once there is available funding, officials plan to eventually pave over the track area for additional parking.
County crews are going to continue doing the work on the berm and “see how efficient” it goes.
“If we can do it efficiently, we’ll continue to remove the remainder of the berm,” Wittry said.
The county plans to place the remainder of the dirt from the berm at a site on Southside Road, he said.
