Hollister – The Hollister National 9-10 “A” team and the Hollister American “B” team went extra innings on Friday night before the National squad came away with a 9-5 victory at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Hollister National, which had won its first game in the tournament 11-1, scored in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Tyler Fhurong singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Freitas, and scored on an error. The American Leaguers answered in the bottom of the first when Tony Amaral walked to lead off the game, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Brian Tobias.
In the second inning, the National squad pushed across three runs to extend its lead. After back-to-back walks to Dillan Williams and Ben Cobb, Matt Hawk sacrificed the runners to second and third base ahead of consecutive doubles by Fhurong and Dylan Lomanto.
National starter Nathan Alvarez held the Americans scoreless in the bottom of the second, then doubled to lead off the top of the third inning. After a Cody Bohannan sacrifice bunt, Ben Cobb grounded out to knock in Alvarez and make the score 5-1 Nationals.
The American team answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning as Tobias led off with a single and advanced to third on an outfield error. Weller Maxwell then singled to knock in Tobias and Patrick Frusetta followed with a triple to right field to score Maxwell and put the score at 5-3.
Reliever Dylan Lomanto closed out the inning for the National squad and threw two more scoreless innings before yielding to Andrew Breen in the bottom of the sixth.
Corey Langley of the American team was hit by a pitch, Damien Botelho hit an infield single, and Tony Amaral blooped a single to right to knock in Langley. Botelho and Amaral also scored that inning to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to extra innings.
In the top of the seventh, Ben Cobb, Matt Hawk, and Lomanto of the National “A” team reached on errors, Freitas tripled, and Cade Vallejo reached on fielder’s choice to push across four more runs and extend the Nationals’ lead to 9-5.
Breen struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh and induced a groundout to end the game and keep the National squad in the winners’ bracket. They will face Hartnell at 10am this morning at Veteran’s Park. The American “B” team remains alive in the double-elimination tourney and will play at 12:30 p.m. today. Games continue through Sunday at Vet’s Park before the District 9 tournament reaches the championship rounds at American Little League’s park in Salinas next week.
