Have you ever heard of a wetland scientist or a flavor chemist? These are two of the jobs described in local authors Susan Echaore-McDavid and Richard McDavid’s newest book, “Career Opportunities in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources.” The book is part of a series of career books published by Ferguson Publishing in New York, which focuses on producing career titles for every age group. Echaore-McDavid and McDavid have lived in Hollister for about seven years. McDavid is originally from Pinole and started his writing career when he and Susan co-authored their first career book, “Career Opportunities in Engineering.”
In an e-mail interview, McDavid began by saying that their purpose for writing this book was to “stimulate awareness and interest in the many careers that are available in the agricultural, food and natural resources industries.” He explained that the “population of people involved in the agriculture industries is growing older,” and feels that it is important for more young people to get involved and take an interest in farming and ranching.
Echaore-McDavid also stated that many people are “unaware of the career and job options that are available” in these different industries. In their book, they cover 99 professions in agricultural production, agricultural services and many more areas.
When asked why they made the decision to write about the agricultural industries, Echaore-McDavid explained that her decision to write this book was “very personal” for her. She grew up in Hollister, before a lot of the housing developments here were present. She wrote it as a tribute to her parents. She said that they had been very involved with farming, both when they lived in the Philippines and the United States. She also said that now that her mother is in her late ’80s, she still has a vegetable garden “that she tends to every day.”
McDavid explained that for him it was his “interest in organic food production” that made him want to write the book.
Echaore-McDavid and McDavid said they both hope that this book will help people interested in changing their profession or looking to find a profession to “learn how to prepare themselves for each occupation.” In their book, for each profession they provide salary information, as well as the education and certificate requirements. Their major goal in writing this book was to provide people with information on picking their career choices. They explained that anyone in any age group can benefit from reading their books. They also said that they provide information to help readers “fully realize their career aspirations.”
The couple explained that when they were younger, they both wish that they could have had books like the ones they write to help them choose their career. Echaore-McDavid said that, “personally, there are quite a few jobs in our agriculture career book as well as other books we’ve written, that I wouldn’t have minded exploring further back then.”
