Hollister High girls basketball has been busy Balers in the Monterey Peninsula College Summer League. The girls were divided into two equal teams and they have played equally well, thus far.

As of July 1, Hollister A, coached by new varsity girls coach Tom Dean, is 3-1. Hollister B, coached by new junior varsity head girls coach Amber Berg, is 3-2.

Hollister A has defeated Seaside, MPC and Hollister B with a loss to Monterey.

“We’re playing very good defense and the shooting has been around 30 per cent,” said Dean.

MPC has its college team entered in the league, but it forfeited to Hollister A in the first scheduled game. Game two saw a 30-21 loss to Monterey. Johni Kiesewetter had 10 points and played good defense, while Kristina Osborne had six boards.

Jaime Hall and Trisha Lee had nine and six points, respectively in a 26-23 win over Hollister B. Megan Smith had three steals. Hall and Lee are both playing for an AAU team out of West Valley College. Hall, an incoming junior, won’t be available for this week’s league play for she’ll be playing in an AAU tourney in Santa Barbara this week.

The Baler A’s had little trouble with Seaside, winning 45-29. Hall (14 points) and Lee (10 points) led the Balers in scoring. Kristina Leal had five rebounds.

Berg praised Denise Simens for playing well under the basket. Simens scored 13 points against Monterey.

“Her help with rebounding has been key to many games,” stated Berg. “Dani Andrewsen has also played well. Her innovation at the one and two spots helps us to shake it up when the (opposing) defense starts to cheat.”

Andrewsen is averaging six points per game.

Dean picked 12 girls from both Hollister teams and participated in the Independence Tournament the early part of July. The team went 3-2 with wins over Independence, Monta Vista and the King’s Academy.

Both teams are in action tonight with Hollister A playing Gilroy and Hollister B playing MPC.
