The following organizations deserve either roses or weeds this week:

Roses: To the Hollister City Council for establishing reasonable rental rates for the Veterans Memorial Building. A treasure of a facility for county residents, the building is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation and will be re-dedicated May 26.

The historic building opened in 1927 and with these newly established rental rates, everyone – from business groups and agencies to couples getting married or celebrating a 50th anniversary to non-profit organizations hold a fund-raiser – can consider hold their event at this building because of the low costs.

Weeds: To the same Council for throwing $1,500 of taxpayers’ money into the wind. Council backed out of attending a three-day workshop to improve working relationships because two of the five members said they could not attend. It’s no secret some members have a difficult time working together, and although the entire Council could not attend, some members could have gone and returned to teach and pass on what they had learned about improving relations.

Roses: To a group of San Benito High School students from the Hollister Chapter of the FFA for winning awards at regional, sectional and state championships. Ten students were awarded state degrees – the largest amount of state degree award ever earned by the local chapter – placing them in the top 10 percent of the state’s FFA members. The students were Amanda Lima, Shawn Beaver, Kyle Valent, Ty Doty, Austin Elking, Samantha Guzman, Jenny Harlow, Ryan Bergamini, Bobby Eckhardt and Lean Falsey.

Roses: To Hollister Hills, the state Vehicular Recreation Area park, for stepping forward and funding a third ambulance to help serve the county during peak times at the off-road park. Currently, the county is covered by two ambulances and when an accident occurs at the park, an emergency crew responds, leaving only one ambulance for the entire county.
