After six straight losses to open the season, the Anzar High boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday night when it defeated host San Jose High by a 42-35 margin in non-league play.

The Hawks, who have been playing with a limited roster this season, have struggled in the second half this year, and especially in the fourth quarter.

And after Anzar controlled a 16-10 lead at halftime on Wednesday night, its second-half struggles appeared to be setting in once again when San Jose High outscored the Hawks 14-11 in the third quarter.

But this time, Anzar managed to stay afloat late in the contest, outscoring San Jose High 15-11 in the final stanza, and holding on for the seven-point win.

“We got off to a pretty good start and we shot the ball pretty well in the first half,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “And we didn’t kill ourselves with turnovers as much.”

Jesse Ramirez led the Hawks with a game-high 22 points, while teammate Nick Salgado added 10 points and Andres Gomez had nine.

Meanwhile, Del Rivero led San Jose High with 11 points.

“We executed a little bit better and we’re getting a little bit better, so it’s encouraging,” Cecena said.

Anzar is now 1-6 on the season.

The team will be off for the holidays, and they won’t return to the court until Jan. 6 when they will take on Oakwood.
