Behind six points apiece from five different players, the Anzar High girls basketball team not only won its second straight game on Wednesday night, but also picked up a Coastal Athletic League victory with a 42-7 triumph over Morgan Hill’s Oakwood Country School.

Raleigh McKinney, Delaney McKinney, Gabby Medina, Amber Papenhausen and Brittany Doty each pocketed a team-high six points for Anzar, which improves to 3-10 overall on the season, 1-0 in the CAL.

Melissa Weckerle, Emily Anderson and Megan Corvalho each added four points for the Hawks.

Anzar, which defeated KIPP San Jose Collegiate on Monday, will play its third game of the week on Friday when it will host Pacific Collegiate in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.

AHS Boys Basketball

The Anzar High boys basketball team defeated Oakwood Country School 56-21 in Morgan Hill on Wednesday night to kickoff Coastal Athletic League play.

Andres Gomez and Jesse Ramirez each scored 21 points apiece to lead Anzar, which now improves to 2-6 overall, 1-0 in the CAL.

Nick Salgado added 12 points for the Hawks.

Anzar managed to shut down Oakwood defensively, forcing it to take outside shots, but with little success.

“Defensively, we were good and offensively we were extremely good,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “Twenty-three points in the fourth quarter, that’s excellent for us.”

The Hawks didn’t have much problem putting Oakwood away, controlling leads of 11-5 after the first quarter and 25-6 at halftime.

It also outscored the Morgan Hill school by a 23-11 margin in the final stanza.

The Anzar boys will look to continue the trend on Friday night when it will host Pacific Collegiate in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
