SANTA CRUZ

The Anzar High girls’ basketball team, leading by as many as six points at one point in the second half, could not hold its lead against host Georgiana Bruce Kirby on Thursday and fell by a 30-27 margin to the Santa Cruz school.

Trailing 12-11 at halftime, the Hawks started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to open an 18-12 lead. But head coach Sam Stewart said the team’s offense remained relatively quiet from that point on.

Kirby outscored Anzar 18-9 through the remainder of the game.

“We had one of those games where we just couldn’t make a basket,” Stewart said. “We had the shots, but we missed.”

The Hawks took a game-tying 3-point attempt as the clock expired on Thursday night, but the equalizing field goal missed.

Although Kirby played mostly in a zone defense throughout the night, Anzar was still able to get into the paint, and still able to take some high-percentage shots.

“We even got the ball inside, but we just missed lay-ups,” Stewart said. “It was just one of those nights.”

The loss drops Anzar to 2-2 in the Coastal Athletic League, 4-12 overall.
