SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

Despite a strong three quarters of basketball, the Anzar Hawks were outscored 21-3 in the second stanza against visiting Gonzales on Monday and couldn’t rebound from the sizable deficit, leading to a 62-44 loss in San Juan Bautista.

Wipe away the second quarter, though, and the Hawks and Spartans are knotted at 41-all. But with Anzar short a player, it had just seven bodies total compared to Gonzales’ 15.

“In and out,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said of Gonzales’ rotation. “They pressed us the whole game and pretty much wore us down. We did all we could with seven guys.”

The Hawks trailed the Spartans 15-14 after one quarter, but 36-17 at halftime.

Mark Rania and Andres Gomez each scored 12 points apiece for Anzar, which falls to 2-10 overall this season.

Alex Valles had 10 points for the Hawks, while Niko Hebert added six.

“The first quarter we were in it,” Cecena said. “We actually executed some stuff and managed to hang in there.”

Gonzales’ Junior Banuelos and David Leyva paced the Spartans with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Anzar will play again on Tuesday when it will visit Greenfield at 7 p.m.

Note: Anzar’s game with Lincoln, originally scheduled for Dec. 7, has been rescheduled for Monday, Dec. 28.
