HOLLISTER

A fast start and a strong second half vaulted the San Benito girls’ basketball team past visiting Alisal 49-17 Thursday night at Hollister’s Mattson Gym.

Behind a game-high 14 points from Kelsey Robledo, the Balers jumped out to a 16-6 lead through the first quarter, then outscored the Trojans by a 26-7 margin in the second half — the latter quarters being played mostly by San Benito non-starters.

“Our offense is really starting to flow,” said Baler head coach David Kaplansky, whose team executed its first three set plays for points to open the game. “We had some good looks tonight and we finished them off early in the game.”

Even better, the San Benito bench entered the game and not only maintained the lead, but added to it. The Balers led 16-6 after one quarter, 23-10 at halftime and 37-14 through three quarters.

Ten Balers cracked the box score, with Robledo’s game-high the only point total to finish in double digits. Sam Puentes and Erin Glasspool added six points apiece, while both Nicole Rianda and Ellie Burley deposited five points each.

“I liked the effort by the whole team,” Kaplansky said. “It’s nice to see the kids execute throughout the game.”

Defensively, San Benito limited Alisal’s Gaby Pantoja, who is averaging more than 13 points per game, to five points on Thursday, while Trojan Juanita Valenzuela led the team with six points.

San Benito is now 2-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League and 10-6 overall, while Alisal drops to 2-1 in the TCAL and 4-9 overall.

The Balers are on the road next Tuesday when they will travel south to take on Salinas (0-3 TCAL, 3-8). Tip-off is 7 p.m.

“I like the momentum right now,” Kaplansky said. “I feel like we’re improving, which is important at this point in the season.”
