Alex Valles scored 11 points, Andres Gomez added eight, and the Anzar boys basketball team defeated host Oakwood 50-13 in Coastal Athletic League action in Morgan Hill Friday night.

Niko Hebert added seven points for Anzar, which improves to 4-2 in the CAL and 6-14 overall.

It was the Hawks’ defense that shined from the second quarter on, however. After Anzar grabbed a narrow 9-7 lead in the first quarter, it then shutout Oakwood in the second period 16-0 to take a 25-7 lead to halftime.

The Hawks then held Oakwood to two points in the third quarter, four in the fourth.

“That pretty much broke the game open,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said of the second period. “Everyone got a lot of playing time and everyone scored, so everyone was happy.”

Nick Salgado had six points for the Hawks, while Izzy Parra and Devon Parish each had five points.

Anzar will host Pacific Collegiate Wednesday in San Juan Bautista at 7 p.m.
