Although both the Anzar boys’ and girls’ basketball teams fell short of their respective league crowns in the Coastal Athletic League this past winter, finishing in second and third place, a total of nine distinctions were passed down to the Hawks when the CAL recently announced its year-end awards, including five first-team selections.

Jesse Ramirez, Andres Gomez and Nick Salgado each received a first-team nod for the Anzar boys, while Delaney McKinney and Melissa Weckerle earned a first-team selection on the girls side.

Weckerle also received the Sportsmanship award in the CAL, which was one of just three awards passed down by the league.

League champion Pacific Collegiate (9-0 CAL) collected the other two awards in Most Valuable Player Aladrianne Young and Coach of the Year in Daniel Kumasaka.

Meanwhile, Shelby Sorensen, Emily Anderson and Gaby Medina each received honorable mention in the CAL.

At 4-5 in league, the Hawks finished in third place this season behind York (6-2) and league champ Pacific Collegiate. They did advance to the Central Coast Section Division V Championships, nevertheless, but were unable to overcome Summit Prep of Redwood City, and fell by a 40-24 margin.

Back on the boys’ side, Pacific Collegiate collected the top two awards when Jason Gilbert was named Most Valuable Player and Bruce Stahl earned Coach of the Year honors. Like their female counterparts, the Puma boys went undefeated in the CAL with a 12-0 record, and earned the league title outright.

Anzar was just three losses behind Pacific Collegiate at 9-3. The Hawks, who were shorthanded to just a few players all season, were led by their first-team selections in Ramirez, Gomez and Salgado, all of whom averaged double-digit point totals.

Ramirez was the offensive leader of that pack. He averaged approximately 20 points per game, and had a three-game stretch in late January when he had back-to-back 30-point games, then followed that with a season-high 31-point performance.

Salgado, meanwhile, scored a season-high 28 points against rival Anchorpoint Christian on Feb. 10, while Gomez deposited a season-high 22 points against Trinity Christian on Jan. 26.

Anchorpoint Christian’s Samuel Apolinar, meanwhile, received the Sportsmanship award.
