SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Jesse Ramirez and Nick Salgado poured in a combined 53 points, and the Anzar Hawks moved a game above .500 in Coastal Athletic League action Tuesday night with an easy 67-36 victory against the York School.
Ramirez led all scorers with 30 points in the game, while Salgado added 23 points for the Hawks, who improve to 3-2 in the CAL, 4-8 overall.
An added bonus for Anzar Tuesday was an additional player in the lineup. The Hawks, having battled numbers issues this season, have played all of their games with just six players. But Tuesday night’s matchup against the private Monterey school saw seven players crack the lineup for the first time this season.
“It makes a difference,” said Anzar head coach Ed Cecena, whose team narrowly led 16-11 after the first quarter before pulling away in the second half.
The Hawks led 32-18 at halftime, and carried a sizable 46-27 lead entering the final period.
Andres Gomez chimed in with eight points for Anzar, while Alex Samuels, Matt Espinoza and Jesse Soliz each added two points.
The game against York was rescheduled from last Thursday, when the Monterey school asked to postpone the match, where as the win for the Hawks follows a difficult 58-50 overtime loss to Anchorpoint Christian from last Tuesday.
Anzar is back on the floor tonight, Wednesday, when it will host Trinity Christian in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
Note:
Anzar’s scheduled home game on Friday against Oakwood has been postponed to Monday night at 7 p.m.
