Cyrena Salinas had 17 points, Kelsey Robledo added 14, and the San Benito girls’ basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak and picked up its first win in Tri-County Athletic League play on Tuesday when it dispatched visiting Notre Dame 60-30.
Erin Glasspool had 10 points in the win, which saw the Balers deposit 18 points in the first quarter, 20 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the fourth and final quarter.
The scoring story continued with Salinas’ 17 points, which was a career-high for the senior guard.
“I thought Cyrena played a great game,” San Benito head coach David Kaplansky said. “She was real aggressive today and really created off the dribble, which was nice.”
As was San Benito’s 18-7 lead after the first quarter. Although the Balers “kind of fell asleep” in the second quarter — outscoring the Spirits 7-6 to take a 24-14 lead at the break — the team exploded in the second half and outscored Notre Dame by a 36-16 margin.
“I was real proud of the third and fourth quarters. It reminded me of our last couple of practices,” said Kaplansky, who’s seen a noticeable uptick in play following last week’s games against North Salinas and Gilroy.
“I really like how the girls are playing right now,” the head coach added. “They’re building confidence in practice, building confidence in games.”
Taylor Fabing, Madeleine LePore and Nicole Rianda each added four points on Tuesday night, while Mari Vallejo, Ellie Burley and Jackie Echaorre each added a basket.
With the win, San Benito improves to 1-2 in the TCAL and 9-6 overall, while Notre Dame drops to 2-1 in the TCAL and 9-6 overall.
The Balers will look to even their league record at .500 on Thursday when they will host Alisal at Hollister’s Mattson Gym. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
