Maria Delgado scored a game-high 24 points and the Gonzales Spartans cruised by host Anzar 50-21 on Tuesday in San Juan Bautista.

Anzar’s Kelsey Robledo scored 11 points and teammate Melissa Weckerle added eight points and seven rebounds for the Hawks, who are now 2-4 overall this season.

Tuesday’s contest was the first under new head coach Mike Bonomi, who had been coaching the junior varsity team at Anzar. Previously, head coach Aaron Netzel was guiding the Hawks, but he recently stepped down due to personal reasons.

Meanwhile, Bonomi’s debut nearly went Anzar’s way. Despite the 29-point difference in the final score, the Hawks stayed close to Gonzales in the first half, and only trailed 17-13 at halftime.

Anzar even scored the first basket of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 17-15, but Gonzales closed the third quarter on a 16-2 run and gained a 33-17 lead.

“It snowballed,” Bonomi said. “They looked tired. They made mistakes, I made mistakes, and everything went Gonzales’ way.”

Anzar was unable to mount any sort of comeback in the final period, as Gonzales outscored the Hawks 17-4.

“There’s a lot of mistakes that can be fixed,” Bonomi said. “We need to work on rebounding, not panicking and shooting.”

Delaney McKinney, who had only two points for Anzar, pulled down seven rebounds on Tuesday night.

The Hawks will return to the court on Thursday when they will host Soledad at 5 p.m.
