Competing with just six players, the Anzar boys basketball team stayed close in the first half but couldn’t outlast visiting St. Thomas More on Thursday night, as the Hawks fell short by a 64-45 margin.
Again, with a limited roster, the Hawks had just three different scorers, with Jesse Ramirez leading the way with a game-high 20 points.
Nick Salgado added 13 points and Andres Gomes had 12 for the Hawks, who fall to 0-4 on the season.
“We played with six kids,” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “We played pretty good in the first quarter. It was pretty tight in the first half, but they just ran us. They pressed us the whole game, and we couldn’t keep up with that pace.”
The Hawks led 11-9 after the first quarter and only trailed by a 23-19 margin at halftime. But St. Thomas More took over in the second half, outscoring Anzar 24-15 in the third quarter.
Patrick Tuttle led St. Thomas More with 15 points.
The Hawks will be back in action on Friday at home when they will host North Valley Baptist at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, Anzar’s scheduled game on Wednesday against KIPP San Jose Collegiate was cancelled.

AHS Girls Basketball
On Wednesday, the Anzar girls basketball team lost to visiting Soledad 55-19.
No box score was reported. The Hawks fall 1-9 on the season as a result.
Anzar will be back in action on Monday when it will host Pajaro Valley at 7 p.m.
