The county Council of Governments released a progress report for the Highway 25 bypass project.

– Traffic Controls and Lane Closure: Lane closures on Sunnyslope Road, Airline Highway, San Felipe Road, and McCloskey Road will continue throughout the week. One-way traffic controls with flagging will remain in effect on McCloskey Road.

– Safety in the construction zone. Anticipate slower traffic conditions and allow for additional time when traveling in these areas. Watch for increased pedestrian traffic in school zones on Meridian Street and Santa Ana Road.

– Sidewalks: Concrete curbs & gutters are being constructed from Sunnyslope Rd. to Meridian St. at various locations.

– Sound Walls. Work continues on the construction of sound walls throughout the project area. Concrete blocks are being put in place on the walls between Sunnyslope Road and Hillcrest Road and the contractor will begin backfill between the sound walls and existing fences in the next week.

– Paving: Paving has been started on the new median on San Felipe Road near the intersection with Highway 25. Paving along the Bypass from Sunnyslope Road to Meridian Street will begin soon.

Auditions for Christmas play

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – El Teatro Campesino is holding additions for its Christmas production, “La Pastorela.” Auditions will be held Friday, Sept. 28 – Sunday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 7 – Friday, Oct. 12. “Hands on health”

TRES PINOS – The “Hands on Health” van will be visiting the San Benito County Fair Friday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to dusk. The van staff, who are working with First 5 San Benito, travel the state with their interactive exhibit.

The exhibit features music, entertainment and educational games to teach children about healthy eating habits.

“Encouraging healthy living amoung our county’s youngest kids is a priority for First 5 San Benito,” said Casey Castillo, executive director of First 5 San Benito.

The exhibit will allow children to try their hand with hula hoops, pineapple dumbbells and a healthy food toss.

Gavilan Health Fair

GILROY – The Gavilan College Student Health Services and Associated Student Body are hosting the 14th annual “High on Health” resource fair. Visitors will have the chance to speak with community exprts, find out about health-related internships and employment, and get referrals for counseling. During the event people can get free testing or referrals for blood pressure, blood glucose and HIV/Aids.

The event is at the Gavilan Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 408-848-4791.

Rideshare week comes up

HOLLISTER – Participants in the upcoming annual San Benito County Rideshare, Oct. 1-5 will have a chance to win a trip around the world. San Benito County Rideshare staff have paired with Commute Alternatives of Monterey County for the 25th annual Rideshare week. Last year more than 1,100 commuters participated in the event. Commuters are asked to commit to using another form of transportation beside driving alone at least one day during the week to reduce traffic, improve air quality and save energy.

People who carpool, vanpool, ride the bus, bicycle, walk or telecommute will have a chance to enter a drawing to win the trip, among other prizes.

Blood drive scheduled

Free and reduced-price meals

HOLLISTER – San Benito County’s public schools are offering free and reduced-price meals for children served under the State Meals Program.

Qualification is based on income and household size, according to a release from the county superintendent’s office.

Military academy nominations due

SANTA CRUZ – Students applying to prestigious military academies who need a nomination from a federal official may submit an application to Congressman Sam Farr’s office until Nov. 1. Candidates to an academy must be at least 17 years old but not older than 22 as of July 1, 2008. They must reside in California’s 17th Congressional, be a U.S. citizen and never have been married.

To be considered for a nomination students are asked to complete an application that can be found at www.farr.house.gov, submit a one-page personal statement, an official high school transcript, official SAT scores, three letters of recommendation not from relatives and a wallet-sized photo.
