San Benito takes on the Independence 76ers in the CCS football
semifinals
By Leann Shea Staff Writer

Hollister – The San Benito Haybalers will have to be firing on all cylinders this afternoon if they want to advance into the Central Coast Section championship game next weekend.

The No. 2 seeded ‘Balers face off against the tough No.3 seed Independence in the CCS semifinal matchup today at San Jose City College at 3:30pm.

San Benito’s defense will have its hands full with Independence’s high powered offense, anchored by quarterback Marces Womack who isn’t afraid to drop back and fling it deep. Womack burned Live Oak for 148 yards and three touchdowns in the air as the 76ers defeated the Acorns 31-23 in the CCS quarterfinal last week.

The ‘Balers defense will be up for the challenge, still riding high after holding Alisal to just 87 yards in the second half of their 34-10 quarterfinal win.

Many San Benito players and coaches attended the 76ers game against Live Oak to scout an Independence team they didn’t know much about.

The ‘Balers offense will counter with quarterback Karson Klauer, who lead the Tri County Athletic League in passing this season. Klauer rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns in San Benito’s victory over Alisal.

Klauer will have another opportunity to run against Independence, who defended the pass well, but had trouble containing the run against Live Oak.

The winner of the semifinal between San Benito and Independence advances to face the winner of the semifinal between Oak Grove and Piedmont Hills in the CCS championship game next weekend.
