San Benito Stage Company opens its fall teen production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” today at the Granada Theater in Hollister.

The musical comedy features 35 teen actors from 13 to 19 years old, and many teens are also involved behind the scenes in the light and sound booths, stage crew or in the orchestra.

“We try really hard to let the teens run the show,” said Kristy Burchard, who is co-producer of the show with Amelia Souza-Hatcher and John Rachuy. “One thing we liked to do is educate as we have fun with theater.”

The latest production is set in the ’60s. Burchard said the costumes are all from that period and the set is very art deco, a style that was popular during the decade.

“We selected the show because for the teens that are the actors, it’s a fun period piece,” she said. “The show is very comedic, about how men climb the ladder to success and the women are just secretaries.”

The most challenging part of the show is that there is a lot of singing in it and Burchard referred to the vocals as “quirky and off beat.”

“But the teens are really enjoying learning the music,” she said.

Burchard has been directing the Kids Rule Theatre Camp for nine years, but this is her first time to produce a show for the San Benito Stage Company.

“I’m really just amazed at the talent of all the teens and the fact that 20 percent of our cast is brand new,” she said. “It’s been so cool to get some new families involved. That’s what we really love – get some new families in and have some camaraderie with new people.”

Auditions were held eight weeks ago, and for the last six weeks, the teens, parents and volunteers have been preparing for opening night. On Thursday, the cast put on two matinee performances for their final dress rehearsals and opened the theater to local schools.

“Local schools had a chance to bring kids for $3,” Burchard said. “It’s an opportunity for kids to come on a field trip and see live theater.”
