Former head golf professional at San Juan Oaks Golf Club and PGA of America member Steve Janisch is moving his services south after he recently was named general manager and head pro at Bolado Park Golf Club, a nine-hole facility in Tres Pinos.

Janisch’s dual position at Bolado Park will be a return for the long-time golf pro. After initially committing to the game in 1980 when he began caddying for George Archer on the PGA Tour, Janisch has since been the golf pro at Coyote Creek Golf Club and Eagle Ridge Golf Club, and previously held the dual GM/golf pro position at The Ranch Golf Club in San Jose.

“It’s a great opportunity for me,” said Janisch, who was attracted to the dual position, which will offer more operational control.

“Fortunately, throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely in all key aspects of a golf operation,” he said in a press statement. “At Bolado Park, I look forward to developing a team who will provide exceptional service at all levels, from teaching and tournament operations, to merchandising, food and beverage, as well as on-course maintenance.”

Janisch, 48, a resident of Gilroy for the last 32 years, replaces Mike Winn as general manager at Bolado Park. His first official day is Saturday, at which point he will oversee all golf and clubhouse operations, as well as course maintenance.

“We are pleased to have Steve Janisch as our PGA general manager,” said Richard Anderson, president of the Board of Directors at Bolado Park, in a press statement. “His knowledge and expertise in the local golf market, coupled with his solid experience as a general manager/head professional with new course developments, makes Steve the ideal candidate to serve as our general manager and head golf professional.”

Janisch leaves San Juan Oaks Golf Club after nearly four years as the head golf professional. His latest stint at San Juan Oaks was actually his second, though; Janisch was the assistant golf pro from 1996-99 when the Hollister course officially opened.

“We wish him the best of luck and we’re sorry to see him leave,” said Manny Freitas of San Juan Oaks, who was recently named Director of Golf at the Fred Couples signature course. Freitas, who has been with San Juan Oaks since 1996, will operate and manage the golf department.

“We wish him all the success at Bolado,” Freitas added. “We hope he does well.”

Having been previously involved with the official openings at Coyote Creek, Eagle Ridge and The Ranch as well, Bolado Park will be the first golf facility for Janisch that already had been established.

The course, with a 5,981-yard, par-70 layout, was built in 1928, and opened a new clubhouse in recent years.

“There are closers in baseball. I’m the opener in golf,” Janisch quipped. “I’m not opening [Bolado Park], but we are relaunching it.”

Janisch said his primary mission with Bolado Park is to improve the course conditions and ensure a positive experience for all golfers involved.

“My goal is to get Bolado Park back toward people talking about it as being one of the finer nine-hole golf courses around, from the course conditions to the facility itself,” he said. “My goal is for people to say, ‘Wow, I want to play there again.'”

Janisch, who was born in Minneapolis and became a PGA member in 1993, also has plans of improving the driving range facility, developing a Web site for the course, as well as introducing a player development program for juniors to adults.

“But the course conditions will be a major point at first, not that they’re terrible, but they definitely need some tender loving care,” Janisch said.

“They can and they will get better.”
