Joseph Filice died at his home Monday morning at the age of 91.

He was born in Washington, came to California living in the Morgan Hill area in 1920 before moving to Hollister in 1926. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Hollister Elk’s Lodge, B.P.O.E #1436, V.F.W. Post #9242 of Hollister, American Legion and the I.C.F. (Italian Catholic Federation). He probably will be remembered by most at the Bolado Park dances where he provided security. There was never a local function, whether at Veteran’s Hall or the high school, that he didn’t provide security. Joe was a local rancher all his life and was a reserve deputy sheriff for over 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Susie, of Hollister; sisters, Bessie Heider of San Francisco and Alice Hocker of Willows; nieces and nephews, Emily Lewelling of Stockton, Gary and Don DeLorenzo of Gilroy, Anthony Vigna of Santa Barbara, Marilyn Rocca of Castro Valley and Deanna Goodrich of Gilroy and many additional nieces and nephews living out of the area. He is the brother of the late Frank and Tony Filice, Ida Vigna and Anne Bess.

A memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, Dec. 3 at 1pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by an Elk’s Memorial service at the church. A final tribute will be provided by the V.F.W. Post #9242 as we leave the church.

Contributions are preferred to the Visiting Nurses Assn. and Hospice of San Benito County.

Funeral services with cremation are under the direction of Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home and Crematory in Hollister.
