Then there was one.

After advancing four teams to the Pop Warner playoffs, only the Junior Pee Wee Vikings remain in the hunt for a Super Bowl appearance.

Sunday the Junior Pee Wee Vikings advanced to the Pop Warner league championship game with a 13-6 win over the West Bay Rams at Townsend Field in Santa Clara.

This Sunday the Junior Pee Wee club travels to San Jose’s Westmont High School to battle the East Bay of Oakland. The Pee Wee Vikings lost 12-0 to the East Bay of Oakland Pee Wee team, ending their season.

The Junior Pee Wee Vikings advanced to the league title game on the strength of its stingy defense and the breakaway speed of running back Andre Cornell.

Cornell’s 80-yard gain on the Vikings’ first play from scrimmage in the second quarter set up Hollister’s first score of the afternoon. The score, however, would be hard earned.

Staked out on the West Bay three-yard line, the Vikings were unable to penetrate the stout front as the opposition held for three downs. On a fourth-and-five, Vikings quarterback Trevor Fabing dropped back and delivered a strike to wide receiver Chris Greenwood.

The Vikings went into the locker room at halftime with a precarious 7-6 lead.

In the second half the Vikings decided to run it right at West Bay’s domineering defensive front.

Vikings fullback Taylor Green fired up his sideline when he rumbled through the gut of the defense on two-consecutive first-down runs. Then, running back Armando Lerma’s 25-yard jaunt brought the Vikings to the West Bay one-yard line.

Lerma completed the deal with a one-yard touchdown run, the Vikings final score of the day.

Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. so go to bed early Saturday night.

If the Jr. Pee Wee Vikings defeat the East Bay of Oakland team, it advances to the Pop Warner regional championships. The winner of the regional championships are then invited to Disney’s Wide World of Sports to participate in the 2002 Super Bowl.
